I just finished reading a Karen Kingsbury book. I really enjoy her books because they are so life applicable. In the end of this book, the character is going through a rough time and finds how God takes them through it. She talks about the "gentle whisper" of God.
It gave reference to 1 Kings 19 where the Lord speaks to Elijah. Elijah ran for hiding in a cave for he feared for his life. The Lord asked him "what are you doing here, Elijah?" Elijah went on to talk about all the negative things going on (Israelites not following God, prophetic causalities, Jezebel's supposed defeat.) Plus he over exaggerates that he is the only one left and they are after his life. At that time a great wind came, an earthquake, and a fire and God was not there in any of them. God was not to be found in the spectacular elements of the storm outside the cave but instead in a low whisper. When Elijah heard his voice, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. God asked him again what he was doing here, and Elijah responded the exact same. The Lord gave him direction on where to go and what to do. This is a paraphrase...if you are interested in reading the whole story, please look it up in your Bible.
This story really hit me. Sometimes in my life I run off and hide in a cave out of fear. I am only thinking about all the things going wrong. I forget how God has blessed me time after time and how he has done amazing things in my life. Then, I look for a miracle (or an answer) in big, loud way. God definitely can answer in these ways, don't get me wrong. And I think to myself as something big happens, Oh, I see how God can work through this! Most of the time when I think that, my miracle doesn't happen through that way.
God can sometimes answer us in gentle whispers. Sometimes when I hear this whisper, I'm like Elijah, I cover up my head and go outside the cave. When my cloak is over my face, it really makes it hard to "see"!! So, my prayer is that I will remember how great our God is (and has been to me), and to be still and listen for His gentle whispers with my eyes wide open (and a heart willing to listen.)
I'm so greatful for the Bible, and all the help it can give me now, even though some of the events took place over a few thousand years ago, they are still applicable today!

I love that the Word of God is always relevant. People are always searching for what to do next, how to "find the will of God," etc., but He has already given us His plan, He has told us what to do, He has given us instructions and encouragement. All we have to do is take up His Word and read. :)
